Is an AI chatbot worth it for a small business?

The honest answer depends on one number: how many repetitive questions your team answers per week. Here's how to run that math before you spend anything.
Start with the hours, not the technology
For one week, have whoever handles your inbox tally every inbound question into rough buckets: hours and location, pricing, availability, order status, everything else. Most local businesses find that four or five question types account for the large majority of volume.
Multiply the count by the minutes each takes. That number is the ceiling on what an assistant can save you, and it's the only honest basis for deciding whether to build one.
What a good assistant actually needs
Grounding in your real documents, so it quotes your policy rather than inventing one. Live access to whatever changes — schedule, inventory, availability. Clear escalation rules so a frustrated customer reaches a human quickly. And logging, so you can see what it got wrong and fix the source.
An assistant without those four things is a liability that confidently tells customers the wrong hours.
When the answer is no
If your inbound volume is low, or nearly every conversation is genuinely bespoke, skip it. A well-written FAQ page and a fast contact form will serve you better and cost nothing to run.
