Custom build vs. template: an honest cost comparison

May 2, 2026 · 5 min read · Cinco Creative

Templates are cheaper on day one. Whether they stay cheaper depends entirely on how much your business changes in the next three years.

Where templates genuinely win

If you need five pages, your offer is stable, and you have no plans to add functionality, a well-chosen template on a maintained platform is a reasonable decision. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

Where they stop winning

The costs show up when the business changes. Adding booking, a member area, or a second location to a template usually means bolting on plugins that each carry a subscription, a performance penalty, and a security surface.

Three years in, many businesses are paying more per month in plugin subscriptions than the difference in build cost would have amortized to — and they still can't get the layout they want.

A practical rule

If your website is a brochure, template it. If your website is part of how the business operates — bookings, quotes, accounts, inventory — build it, and build it on something a developer can extend without fighting the platform.
